Background of the study
Effective communication in diplomatic settings is essential for building strong international relationships and facilitating negotiations. In Enugu, where Igbo is a key language in diplomatic contexts, interpreter-mediated communication plays a crucial role. Interpreters serve not only as language conduits but also as cultural mediators, ensuring that nuanced diplomatic messages are accurately conveyed between Igbo-speaking diplomats and their international counterparts (Okafor, 2023). Diplomatic interpretation demands proficiency in both language and protocol, as well as the ability to manage sensitive and complex exchanges in real time. Training programs for diplomatic interpreters emphasize not only linguistic skills but also a deep understanding of cultural norms and diplomatic etiquette (Nwankwo, 2024). Despite these efforts, challenges such as rapid speech, idiomatic expressions, and contextual ambiguities can impede communication and lead to misunderstandings. This study examines the dynamics of interpreter-mediated communication in Igbo diplomatic contexts by analyzing recorded diplomatic sessions, interviewing professionals, and evaluating interpreter training programs. The objective is to identify the factors that affect interpretation quality and propose recommendations to enhance communication efficacy in diplomatic engagements (Okafor, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Interpreter-mediated communication in Igbo diplomatic contexts often faces challenges stemming from rapid dialogue, complex diplomatic terminology, and cultural nuances that are difficult to render accurately (Nwankwo, 2024). Inconsistencies in interpreter training and the absence of standardized protocols can result in misinterpretations that adversely affect diplomatic negotiations and relationships (Okafor, 2023). This study seeks to identify the key obstacles to effective interpretation in these settings and propose improvements to interpreter training and performance to ensure clearer diplomatic communication.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the quality of interpreter-mediated communication in Igbo diplomatic contexts.
  2. To identify challenges that impede accurate interpretation.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving interpreter training and standardization.

Research questions:

  1. What challenges do interpreters face in Igbo diplomatic contexts?
  2. How do these challenges affect diplomatic communication?
  3. What measures can improve interpreter performance?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the role of interpreters in facilitating effective communication in Igbo diplomatic contexts in Enugu. The findings will inform diplomatic institutions and interpreter training programs, ensuring that sensitive diplomatic exchanges are conducted with clarity and cultural sensitivity, ultimately strengthening international relations (Okafor, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to interpreter-mediated communication in Igbo diplomatic contexts in Enugu and does not extend to other diplomatic settings or languages.

Definitions of terms:

  • Interpreter-mediated communication: The process by which interpreters facilitate spoken exchanges between parties.
  • Diplomatic contexts: Formal settings involving international or intergovernmental negotiations.
  • Igbo language: The indigenous language of the Igbo people.
